Time for a change...
I've decided to transition back from management and become an IC. The work out there in the world for AI-driven engineering is too tempting and too interesting to sit on the sidelines any longer. I feel that I have been preparing most of my career to do the kind of work that is valuable right now.
Yesterday was my last day at Gusto. It's been an excellent 3 and 1/2 years, and I am extremely thankful for the connections that I've made, the folks I was able to empower, and the amazing products that we built.
Some of the highlights of my tenure:
One of my teams was able to reduce the worst situation in benefits from 5% to less than 1%.
One of my teams was able to create an integration with a new provider that saved the company 90% of our previous cost, potentially making this a loss leader instead of an add-on.
Another team was able to automate 10% of all orders for all of our customers preventing manual error and speeding up delivery.
Overall, the work that my teams did saved the company tens of millions of dollars, and will continue to pay the company tens of millions of dollars over the course of the next few years.
Nine of my reports earned promotions, and I received my first ever promotion.
